I was having coffee yesterday afternoon with Heather, where we ran into Mitika and Amanda at Walker’s. Mitika came over to say hello and invite me to Terrapin this weekend, and I explained that I’ll be in Florida for Sun n’ Fun (more on that in a minute). Her immediate response was to ask, “Do you ever, y’know, stay HERE for a weekend?” I laughed, and weakly explained that I spent last weekend in Athens, but deep down I knew she was right. I’ve been all over the place lately, and doing a lot of traveling. DC, Baltimore, New Jersey, Colorado, Sarasota…I can’t seem to sit still. Maybe it’s the impending loss of my S2 flight status when I graduate, or the fact that I’m trying to stay busy while Dave’s gone. All I know is that the map in my room is dotted with tiny little stickers, all up and down the East Coast, indicating the places I’ve traveled recently or intend to visit soon. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And my plans for this weekend? Well, as any aviation enthusiast would know, Sun n’ Fun is one of the largest annual aviation festivals in the world. Every year, thousands of people fly their private airplanes into Lakeland, FL for a week of airshows, movies, contests, vendor booths, massive pig roasts, camping, and general debauchery. “Huge” does not even begin to describe this thing. I’ve been twice before, and it seems to get bigger and better every year. So when Dad mentioned that he and Keith would be flying the Diamondstar (one of our family planes) down and staying in Sarasota with our extended family, I knew I had to go. Mom will be there, too, which also means this will be the first “family vacation” we’ve taken in years. I’ll hop a Delta plane to SRQ after class on Friday, spend Saturday in aviation heaven, and hang out with the family Sunday morning before flying back to ATL. I can’t think of a better last-minute trip!
I’ll try to write up a blog about our Colorado trip at some point this weekend, as well. And if nothing else, expect a million pictures of airplanes and Mallard’s friends!
